Workshop Description

Artwork by Joyce Silverstone This workshop is a guided exploration of combining and creating relief and monotype plates. Students will carve and incise plastic substrate plates that can be rolled for relief printing and altered with monotype inking techniques. This is a playful method of introducing a quick-carved line or form into the monotype, creating a rich vocabulary of mark making. Open to both beginning and experienced printmakers.

Joyce Silverstone is planning a relaxed and experimental experience with many small carved plates moving in and out of play. There will be no pressure to produce a final piece, but more of a focus on process. Students will explore and learn what is possible with this easy to carve plate, combined with monotype printing techniques.

The studio will provide the essential fundamentals: ink, plates, some paper. Recommended: bring an apron; gloves (like light garden gloves or latex gloves to protect hands while carving. Plus bring reference materials or natural objects to act as inspiration.
