“Construction / Deconstruction / Reconstruction”

My process for making a monoprint collage (construction) starts with creating images by using various printmaking techniques (monoprint, chine colle, woodcuts).  After creating an image I rip it up into pieces of different sizes (deconstruction).  These pieces are used to create a new image---I select a ripped piece and glue it onto a new surface such as wood, canvas or paper (reconstruction).  After each piece is glued on the new surface, it is put through a printing press to secure it in place. Depending upon the number of ripped pieces used, this can result in dozens of runs through the printing press.  The final step involves adding either watercolor or acrylic paint to the piece and running it through the printing press one last time.

My goal is to create a piece of artwork that is significantly different and more intriguing than the original artwork, and one that has a 3-dimensional feel to it.  I hope to create work that invites the viewer to look at it in close detail in order to try to see the pieces that make up the artwork.  I also hope that the viewer sees something new in the piece each time they look at it.
