"SIGNS OF THE TIMES” monotype, collage, paint & mixed media  30”X23”

"PEEKING THROUGH THE LABYRINTH/SANIBEL" monotype 26"X26"

“ELECTRIC CALLIGRAPHY...from Sanibel” enhanced monotype 28X34
Inspired by the vines growing out of water along the road in Sanibel,
Florida. I was intrigued by the overgrowth and labyrinthine quality. What
was beyond? Haunted by the impression of this when I got back to my studio
on Cape, I had to explore the gestural equivalent of this feeling. A number
of paintings, drawings and prints were generated. This is one of them.
When I worked on the gestural equivalent with color I was happy with the
colors that bounced off one another that to me were electric.

POETICS

All of us have marveled at the flight of a bird,
The exacting formations of tides on a beach.
Imaginative forms lurking behind trees or in rocks...
Or the positive perfection of the human form and all its parts.

These are universal experiences which are yet enigmatic
Since they cannot be fully contained in time and space.

There is a kind of preciousness
In the smallest and most insignificant thought or material.
They become images of the mind and experiences of the soul
Which are forever to be created and re-created.

The COMPLETED picture is just beyond our grasp.
THE REAL TRUTH REMAINS ILLUSIVE.
It mirrors both our inner & outer world.
That is why, for me at least,
My work must be created in an additive manner....
Inclusive...Fluid.

I move towards a kind of visual language,
Consisting of lines, shapes, tones and colors
That convey a personal calligraphy of sorts.
The tactile & spontaneous handwriting
Loaded with an emotion all its own and very personal.

I try to encompass both Energy and Release.
My own version of the Yin-Yang universality of life itself.

Working in many media as well as combining media,
Has been a very necessary part of the creative experience for me.

Constantly & restlessly seeking relationships
between all things no matter how diverse.
I discover the ABSTRACT in the REAL .

There is the unexpected juxtaposition
Of materials & ideas....
The final and inevitable twist.
I am willing to take chances as I move
Toward the final fold or the empty space.

There is the most fragile line between destruction or creation.
IT IS THE MOST EXCITING &  LIBERATING PART OF ART FOR ME.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT
For me, there is an exciting diversity and design in the common or mundane aspects of daily life.
I am inspired by architectural structures, (billboards, or road signs juxtaposed against surprising sunsets) or pristine forms found in Nature. In my frequent travels on roads through Cape Cod, New York and Florida, I am constantly inspired and amazed by this diversity and the “stuff of life itself”...The light, color and texture.
The source for my imagery can be found in these unique spaces experienced and then internalized or re-structured.

Design is everywhere, the joy is in sharing the vision and synthesizing thoughts and feelings.
The magic  is in the re-organization of space, and the interplay of materials and process.
All is in a state of growth or transformation…Like Nature itself. The poetry  is in the truth of the image  because it speaks in a universal language.

As a painter as well as a printmaker, I am caught up in the idea of “chance and of “process” and of the nature of materials that is so exciting that I have never looked back. My latest work seeks to achieve a kind of synthesis of interior and exterior spaces: Images of life en-meshed with painting and a multitude of
materials and techniques. This approach has spawned a kind of inward response that is an abstraction...largely intuitive, gestural and expressive.
