Infants

Avenger

STATEMENT:

The current imagery is meant to convey the paradox of childhood and our idealization and sometimes naïve trust in nature and animals. Portraits of infancy and puberty reveal a sense of secrecy and fragility, as well as both a helpless exposure and a mysterious façade. The same mystery – and a certain danger – is imbued in the scenes of animals (sometimes commingling with children) wherein cute exteriors and seemingly harmless play may hide more sinister natures.

I continue to gravitate towards printmaking out of a desire to work and rework an image, using as guides the surprises and accidents that occur in the studio during the printing process. I view the entire process as a
constant fluctuation between the wielding and relinquishing of control.
The practice of editioning prints increases my sensitivity to such crucial factors as timing and the application of ink, although I sometimes avoid it in order to explore the variations that can be achieved through selective inking and wiping, the varying of plate tone, and the combining of mediums.
