A Mother's Story

       Artist Statement

Artists have been called “the antennae of the race.” As such, I express my political viewpoints in printmaking and collage, although artwork with political themes is frequently frowned upon in some New England audiences. The 9/11 disaster and the political consequences have called for strong statements based on current events. The woodcut/monotype “9/11” has been accepted for the permanent collection of the Boston Public Library, Dept. of Prints and Drawings.

I began my art education late in life,(roughly at age 63) when I began taking classes at Mass College of Art, while still employed at State Street Bank. After applying for admission, I was accepted, and graduated with a BFA “with honors” at age 70. It was the proudest moment of my life!

Among my professors at MassArt were Marcia Lloyd, Rick Brown, George Greenamyer, Christopher Chippendale and Paul Celli. To this day, I continue my studies of printmaking with Esther Maschio and with several painters at the South Shore Art Center and North River Art Society. If you ever stop learning, you’re dead, even if you‘re still walking around.

Among my favorite artists of the past and present are Rembrandt, Leonardo da Vinci, Johann Sebastian Bach, Duke Ellington, Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, Joseph Cornell, Jacques Lipschitz, Frida Kahlo, Michael Mazur, David Smith and Wolf Kahn.
