POETICS

All of us have marveled at the flight of a bird,
The exacting formations of tides on a beach.
Imaginative forms lurking behind trees or in rocks...
Or the positive perfection of the human form and all its parts.

These are universal experiences which are yet enigmatic
Since they cannot be fully contained in time and space.

There is a kind of preciousness
In the smallest and most insignificant thought or material.
They become images of the mind and experiences of the soul
Which are forever to be created and re-created.

The COMPLETED picture is just beyond our grasp.
THE REAL TRUTH REMAINS ILLUSIVE.
It mirrors both our inner & outer world.
That is why, for me at least,
My work must be created in an additive manner....
Inclusive...Fluid.

I move towards a kind of visual language,
Consisting of lines, shapes, tones and colors
That convey a personal calligraphy of sorts.
The tactile & spontaneous handwriting
Loaded with an emotion all its own and very personal.

I try to encompass both Energy and Release.
My own version of the Yin-Yang universality of life itself.

Working in many media as well as combining media,
Has been a very necessary part of the creative experience for me.

Constantly & restlessly seeking relationships
between all things no matter how diverse.
I discover the ABSTRACT in the REAL.

There is the unexpected juxtaposition
Of materials & ideas....
The final and inevitable twist.
I am willing to take chances as I move
Toward the final fold or the empty space.

There is the most fragile line between destruction or creation.
IT IS THE MOST EXCITING & LIBERATING PART OF ART FOR ME.

       Artist Statement

My art has to do with travelling between two places and what I do when I get there.

Someone asked me once where my art studio is. At that point I realized that I actually work out of three studios:

The first one is in a moving car.

Drawing From a Moving Car” is on-going and plays a significant role in the direction of most of my art whether it is painting, drawing, or printmaking. Personal responsibilities require frequent trips between Florida and Cape Cod. Between these long distances, the car becomes my studio environment with an ever-changing panoramic view of twisting roads and signs with subliminal messages.

Images pass my vision at varied speeds---sometimes at 70 miles per hour. I draw in a frenzy at these speeds directly onto a lithographic plate. I utilize a selective process, relying freely on composing with speed as I am always conscious of the actual space of the paper or the actual plate I am working on. In the last four years, I have found that increasingly, it is the calligraphic gesture that is the truest form of mark-making. These drawings have developed into countless lithographs, etchings, and monotypes as well as informing the direction of my abstract prints.

On Cape Cod

My studio houses a French American Tool Etching Press. I synthesize my “Drawings From a Moving Car” with the process and the materials. This approach guides me toward a great deal of experimentation that further grounds me to focus on my message.

In Florida

My studio overlooks a golf course which combines instantly the mundane with the sublime changes in Nature. In Florida, I am surrounded by palms on a daily basis. I find myself mesmerized by such things as movement and change as a continuum...how palms engage with each other as well as the space they occupy; how they turn, twist, rise or fall, with the wind. And finally how they metamorphose in human and gestural terms.. The theme has inspired a host of drawings some measuring six feet as well as a significant body of prints. I wrote a dedication to these Palms:

“PALMS IN THE WIND”
Branches dance and cut through space
Monumental symphonies
Grace, Energy, Silence
