       Artist Statement for Garment Series

Although at first glance depicting clothing may seem superficial, it is hard to deny the influence fashion has on contemporary life. We are bombarded with fashion statements, fashionistas, what to wear and what not to wear every day. Our clothes have become part of our identity as individuals and as a culture. It is the rare person in today’s society that does not ponder, at least for a moment, the proper dress for that special event, whether it is a job interview or a wedding. Once the final decision has been made an everlasting association exists between memory of the event and what was worn at the time. In my work, I try to invoke associations and allow the viewer to create stories that revolve around the garment. Every person’s reaction and association to the garment is personal and taps into their own memories or spurs their imagination to create a story.
