Artist's Statement I work with several different printmaking processes to create a final piece. These include monotype (single prints), relief prints and collographs. Sometimes I collage my printed papers and other times the monotype print is the final piece. I have used Charbonnel etching inks for many years but lately I have been using Faust oil based water miscible inks to simplify and detoxify clean up. I use heavy weight archival papers (like Rives BFK) and lighter Japanese (kitikata) and decorative rice papers. My process begins with some very basic doodling with pencil and paper and then I move on to inking the plexi glass plate. Using my drawing as a springboard I lay down stencils and textured items and run the paper through the press. I then will run a 2nd, or ghost print, from the plexi and sometimes more if the plate still looks interesting. Working back and forth on several printed papers I’ll re-ink the plate, lay down more stencils and/or print directly from the stencils. It’s a very spontaneous, flowing and reactive style of working. I’m looking for that aha moment when color, texture, and composition feel right to me. I am interested in translucency and the overlapping of colors and shapes. Favorite images are basic roundish shapes and skinny curly lines. Because I’m working fast and freely not all printed papers are finished art works. I save all these “rejects” and recycle them into collages. My collages tend to be more pictorial and planned than the abstract monotypes. About Artist I was born and raised in Melbourne, Florida. My mother was an artist who attended Black Mountain College and studied with Josef and Anni Albers. She was instrumental in introducing me to art and a love of colors and patterns. I graduated from Brown University in 1973 with a major in art and went on to study at Maryland Institute of Art and The University of Massachusetts. I have worked in many different media, concentrating for the last 15 years on printmaking and collage. Throughout my career I have always worked from my imagination, creating worlds of color and shape that strive for a balance between harmony and dissonance that strike me as the dance of life. I work spontaneously; putting down colors on my plate, printing them and overprinting according to what is suggested by the results. When I collage the printed material I have more control of the end result but I still try to maintain that sense of chance and surprise. Contact Information E-mail: LGBatchelor@comcast.net |
