I started to create monotypes when I discovered that the complexities I enjoyed as a painter could be combined with the unexpected pleasures of printmaking. Each new print begins with a feeling of playfulness as I invariably choose the lightest colors to flood the plate. After the first few layers I react to this image.
Playfulness now gives way to structure as I make critical decisions about additional layers. My use of stencils and water writing creates texture, darkening some areas while releasing others. These veils of colors create shape and depth. Furthermore, the push and pull between light and dark produces portals moving the viewer from one realm to another. Every turn of the press leads me to take the next step in an unrehearsed dance.
My drawings, paintings and printmaking represent the stages of my life, what I have gone through, the people and places who have influenced me. My work shows emotional themes common to many people – frustrations, doubts and on the other side – joyfulness and fulfillment. The layering and choices of colors express the different emotions I go through during the printing process. My current work conveys the breaking of boundaries, the struggling and the overcoming of obstacles as my journey evolves.
