       Artist Statement

My process of making art begins with my life experiences: running, walking and exploring˜smells, sights, sounds and light. The land, the Mountains the Arboretum, and the Ocean, inspire me. I meditate and draw spontaneous marks in my journal, after running and spending time outdoors. I experience a transformation of activity and energy that lends itself to working the image further through the printmaking process. My work intuitively lends itself to monotype, woodcut and etching. The sensation of carving, the smell and the feel of the wood is satisfying. There is an energy that carries through the procedure of printmaking that is challenging and rewarding that often leads to valuable discovery.

I strive to convey the chi‚ the Chinese word for life force and energy, combining my experience with drawing and printmaking. The inking is a sensual experience that culminates with a letting go and trusting in the process of the final moment of lifting the plate.

I am compelled to make art to feel whole and at one with nature and the universe. When I am able to capture my experience and translate the energy flow and life force into a concrete image that resonates for the viewer and for me, then I feel joy, satisfaction and peace.
