Ms. Smith’s present interest is in the monotype/monoprint. Some of her recent work involves aquatinted zinc etching plates cut into various geometric shapes. These are rolled up with ink in black or color, placed in various configurations together on an etching press with a piece of dampened, 100% rag paper over them and printed. The result is shades of gray/black or color. These plates are re-inked moved to a different position and printed again. This results in deeper shades or new mixed colors when they are laid over the previous print. This print may go through the press several times. The effect can be and has been in this series, a luminosity of color and subtle shading in a geometric design.
Ms Smith has taught art/workshops on Cape Cod and in Maine. In monotypes, other techniques can be used. Combinations of woodblock, linocut, etching, silkscreen, cutout stencils and free-hand painting, can all be used in one print. Some prints are combined with parts of other prints which are collaged to add texture, variety and sometimes a 3-D effect. (Ms. Smith’s print FLY ME TO THE MOON has examples of some of these techniques.) Smith is past president of MGNE and now vice-president of the Printmakers of Cape Cod.
