The Family’s Under Water Now

Although often held apart as opposites, science and art share an intimate and long-standing relationship. In the field of genetics, the term “genetic landscape” has been used to refer to the various genetic influences that bring about a result, contribute to a disease, or shape an outcome. My recent work draws from and explores the idea of genetic landscapes, interpreted in a literal sense as places, where we might consider the impact of populations on the land or the structure of families, or interpreted more loosely, as related to the ideas of reproduction, inheritance, and unintended consequences. I find printmaking to be an excellent medium for expression of these ideas and images. For me, making monotypes typically involves many runs through the press using multiple techniques to generate a final image. This makes it possible to create layers, ambiguity, and excitement in a final work.
